Purelankan eBook Store
Purelankan had been the brainchild of two Sri Lankans living in Singapore who had felt the urge to have books published in Sri Lanka but have felt the difficulties of logistics, which in turn had led to the concept of an eBook store. It had been established in 2014 with the sole purpose of bringing a platform for Sri Lankans to enjoy ebooks by Sri Lankan authors. The platform facilitates all three main languages of the country. It operates with a mission statement to be the go to website for Sri Lankan ebooks by 2020. The Purelankan platform includes a website, iOS App and an Android App. The ebooks have been obtained with proper contractual agreements with the copyright holders. Authors do get the opportunity to promote their writings through the postings on the site blog. Puesrilankan has made Sri Lankan books go digital and opening up content to anyone from anywhere.
The web solution has used proprietary software to suit the Sri Lankan market. The solution addresses the non technically savvy authors and publishers and offers an excellent platform to any author and/or publisher. The challenges in digitizing Sinhala and Tamil fonts with limited resources by the duo had been well achieved. The promotion of content via the social media suite with eBook reviews, video interviews of authors and photographs adds a touch of class to the functionality. Jury appreciates the vision statement of Purelankan to be the digital archive of Sri Lankan culture. Site statistics indicate the growing popularity of this new offering in an era of low readership and hope the migration to a digital screen may bring back some of the lost readers of Sri Lankan books. Site carries a blog, which is quite useful.
Grand Jury hopes the collection and more innovative features such as gift downloads, education aids would come to the site as fulfilling the vision would take some commitment.
